An introduction to Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP And Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP Transceiver

1000BASE is a standard of Gigabit Ethernet and it stands for the transmission speed can be up to 1000 Mbit/s. It provides 10 times faster transfer speed than 100BASE Ethernet. The “BASE” means the based signals can only be Ethernet signals. SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) is one of transceivers featuring compact form factor. Thus, 1000BASE SFP means that a transceiver with small form-factor applies for the transmission speed of 1000 Mbit/s. Nowadays, 1000BASE SFP has been developed into many different types according to different standards, such as 1000BASE-X SFP (IEEE 802.3z), 1000BASE-T (IEEE 802.ab), 1000BASE-LX10 and 1000BASE-BX10 (IEEE 802.3ah)... As a worldwide leader in IT and networking, Cisco 1000BASE SFP transceivers offer a rich set of choices in terms of speeds, protocols, reaches and supported transmission media. In this text, we would mainly introduce Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP and Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP for you.

Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP
Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP is fully covered in the standard IEEE 802.3z and it can only be operated over multimode fiber, such as OM1 and OM2. The letter “S” in the term “SX” stands for short range. The wavelength of Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP is around 770 to 860 nm. And most commonly, Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP is connected with LC connector. Seeing that it is only used with multimode fiber-optic cabling, Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP is primarily used for shorter cable runs between pieces of equipment within a building. The transmission distance of Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP over OM1 with a 62.5 μm core diameter is 275m while the maximum distance is 550 m over OM2 with a 50 μm core diameter. Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP is intended mainly for connecting high-speed hubs, Ethernet switches, and routers together. Hence, this standard is warmly welcomed in large office buildings, co-location facilities and carrier-neutral Internet exchanges for inner building links.

The above image shows the picture of Cisco GLC-SX-MM. It is compatible with 1000BASE-SX standard that operates over multimode fibers for a distance of 550m.

Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP
Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP is completely complied with standard IEEE 802.3z. Being quite opposite of Cisco 1000BASE-SX, the letter “L” stands for long distance. Compared to Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP, Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP uses longer wavelength to transfer and the wavelength is around 1,270 to 1,355 nm. Not as the same as Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP, 1000BASE-LX can be used for both single-mode and multimode fiber optic. The transmission distance of Cisco 1000BASE-LX can be up to 550 m on any multimode fibers. As for normal single-mode fibers, it can arrive 5 km. Cisco 1000BASE-LX/LH can support a distance up to 10 km with a single-mode fiber of high quality. Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP has been widely used by many users now.

Summary
1000BASE SFP transceivers play a prominent part for Gigabit Ethernet application in telecom market . Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP and Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP are the two most popular types among 1000BASE SFP transceivers. You can select a right one based on your need. If you need one to connect equipment within short range, Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP would be great. When long-reach transmission is required, Cisco 1000BASE-LX SFP is highly recommended.
